Tempe, Arizona: Home of the Sun Devils

Tempe, Arizona is located on the banks of the Salt River in Maricopa County and borders on the cities of Phoenix, Guadalupe, Chandler, Scottsdale and Mesa. Within the city are several buttes which give the city its name, because the 300ft tall Hayden Butte looked like the Vale of Tempe in Greece to early pioneers. Established in 1865 as a fort town to support future settlements further up the river, Tempe is one of the older cities in the Phoenix metro area. As a result it has become the most densely populated. Currently the population is around 175,000.

While many residents of Tempe, AZ travel into Phoenix for work, there are a number of major companies, including US Airways and Insight Enterprises, that are headquartered in Tempe. The city is also the origin of the Coldstone brand of ice cream stores and home to Arizona Mills, one of the largest shopping malls in the state. A large number of Tempe residents also work in education, as the city is home to the main campus of Arizona State University, which has a student population of over 35,000.

Though Tempe, Arizona has no major league sports teams, the Arizona State University Sun Devils are competitive in NCAA football, basketball and baseball and enjoy the support of nearly the whole city. The Fiesta Bowl is hosted at their stadium and coincides with one of the nation's largest New Year's Eve parties.

Neighborhoods and Home Styles in Tempe, AZ

Tempe, Arizona is a fairly old city compared to some of its neighbors, and as such has had more time to develop. While other Phoenix suburbs are no more than collections of pre-planned suburban bedrooms laid out as resting places for workers from urban Phoenix, Tempe is a city in its own right as well. What this means is that you have more options in terms of neighborhoods than you would in places like Chandler or Scottsdale. You can still get the traditional winding suburban tree-lined streets of course, but you can also find a thriving downtown area and numerous neighborhoods of higher-density housing with an urban feel where you can walk to restaurants and shops.

Like Phoenix's other suburbs, housing in Tempe, AZ is weighted more toward single family detached homes, many of which are spacious one story Spanish ranch style homes that suit the hot, arid climate. Many of these homes have been built in the 1970s and 1980s, the boom days for Arizona suburban housing. However, because of Tempe's self-sufficiency, you can also find a large number of apartment and condo high rises near downtown offices that are perfect for young professionals. The neighborhoods around Arizona State University also provide affordable apartments and dormitory housing for students attending the university.

The cost of living in Tempe, Arizona is 97.6, near the national average and less than Phoenix or Scottsdale, which is good news for students. The average single family home costs about $371,000 while the average town house costs around $192,000. Condos range from $198,000 to $215,000 on average. Average rents are about $870 per month.
