Reference Resources

No matter what you do in life, whether you stamp out license plate covers in factories or work as a reference librarian yourself, you're occasionally going to come across questions you don't know the answer to. Luckily though, this is the information age, so you won't be condemned to live in a semi or uninformed state if you're willing to expend a little effort to fill the gap in your knowledge. If you're looking for answers, use this guide to give you some hints on where to go looking for the answers.

Online Articles

If you're just interested in getting information that will settle a bet or assuage your curiosity, you can do quite well just by looking at online encyclopedias like Wikipedia. There are website on just about everything, from what order the Harry Potter books go in to how plumbers install suction diffusers. Just type your query into a search engine like Google and let 'er rip. Just be careful to corroborate several sources in your online research and stick more to .org or .gov sites, because the are no truth police on the internet.

Books and Videos

If you need to get more in depth on a subject, perhaps for a school paper or if you're thinking of changing careers, you'll want to move beyond encyclopedias and onto full length books and documentaries. You can find instructional videos on how to design keels for sailboats, what paleobotanists do, and how exactly the battle of Gettysburg went down that go into enough detail to make you a lay-expert. And the best part is that if you get them from the library, you don't even have to pay anything for your knowledge.

Trade Periodicals

People who are already very familiar with a topic and wish to delve into its nooks and crannies often find their thirst for knowledge quenched by trade periodicals. Platinum bullion traders might subscribe to CNN Money and literary writers might regularly read the New Yorker. You don't have to subscribe to a periodical to reap its knowledge, however. You can use library database searches to find articles on particular topics, most of which, even for back issues, are scanned and available in full online.

Ask an Expert

Of course, you'll have to go down a lot fewer dead ends if you tailor your search just right, and the best way to do that is to hone it by asking a person, who can ask questions to clarify what exactly it is you want. So if you want to know how shrink sleeves are made, ask someone who works in a factory. If you want to know how to use a defibrillator, ask a doctor. Even if you don't know the right person, a reference librarian can usually help.
